SALGA commemorates Mandela Day (Mpumalanga)

Posted: 18 July 2024

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in partnership with Gert Sibande District Municipality and Mkhondo Local Municipality joined the world to contribute to and celebrate Mandela Day by visiting the Bambanani Victim Empowerment Centre in Amsterdam today.

"As SALGA we appreciate the good work that Bambanani Victim Empowerment Centre is doing within the community", said the SALGA Provincial Director of Operations Dr. Derrick Ndlovu.

Bambanani Victim Empowerment Centre began in 2021 after the realization of a need to support victims of different abuse, who can be counseled and supported. The Centre also embarks in campaigns within the community that educate citizens and create awareness of the support that they provide. The Centre works together with the South African Police Service, the Department of Social Development, as well as other Victim Empowerment Centers. " Our wish one day is to have a bigger center so that we can provide more support to our community", said Mr. Ndlovu, the Center's representative. SALGA donated essential items to the Center.

Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated on 18 July every year in honour of the first democratically elected President of South Africa, the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009 and was first officially celebrated in 2010.

Mandela Day is used to encourage individuals to volunteer to help change the world for the better, and in doing so build a global movement for good. Madiba always valued the importance of doing something for others, and individuals, communities, and businesses can donate their time by supporting a charity or helping those less fortunate.

No matter how small the action, the aim is to change the world for the better - just as Mandela did.
