2024 International Women's Day

Posted: 07 March 2024

This month marks International Women's Day (IWD), which always falls on March 8 and is celebrated across the world. The day has also become a major part of the women's rights movement and has helped create conversations about gender biases. This day serves as a reminder that women are still struggling for a better society. Moreover, it's an opportunity to make genuine efforts to end gender biases and discrimination across the world.

This year's theme is "Inspire Inclusion", and the goal of the campaign is to "inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion for a better world. The campaign is committed to inspiring inclusion with discussions such as "When women aren't present, we must ask, If not, why not?"

The United Nations also has an annual theme for the occasion, with this year's being: "Invest in women: Accelerate progress". The campaign acknowledged that "achieving gender equality and women's well-being in all aspects of life is more crucial than ever," especially if we'd like to "create prosperous economies and a healthy planet". According to UN Women, "the world is facing many crises, ranging from geopolitical conflicts to soaring poverty levels and the escalating impacts of climate change. These challenges can only be addressed by solutions that empower women. By investing in women, we can spark change and speed the transition towards a healthier, safer, and more equal world for all."

How SALGA and SAWID are Commemorating International Women's Day 2024

The SALGA Women's Commission (SWC) and the South African Women in Dialogue (SAWID) are commemorating the 2024 International Women's Day 2024 by co-hosting a Dialogue on awareness and enhancing understanding of Gender Legislation and Policy in South Africa. The session is aimed at fostering dialogue among constitutional experts, human rights advocates, and key stakeholders on current gender legislations and policies.

The topic aligns with the focus area of the SWC Resolutions and Programme of Action 'Legislation / Policy Review and Reform' which involves identifying gaps in legislation and participating in legislative reviews and reforms for inclusion of women representation quotas in policies and legislation. The session will provide a platform firstly, for in-depth discussions, sharing of insights and identifying strategies for advancing women's rights and secondly, to inform stakeholders, including municipal representatives of the Women's Commission, the Multi-Party Women Commission and the Special Programmes Officers, about legislative developments.

Key Stakeholders and Speakers for the Dialogue include representatives from the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE), Department of Home Affairs, Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Academia.

Objectives of the session are as follows:

  • Facilitate a dialogue with constitutional experts and human rights advocates to analyse the current landscape of gender legislation in South Africa.
  • Provide updates on the status of gender bills, including the Single Marriage Statute, Gender-based Violence Bill, and Electoral Act, as outlined in the SALGA-SAWID Implementation Plan.
  • Foster collaboration among stakeholders from government departments, civil society organisations, and international bodies to advance gender equality and legislative reforms.

Expected Outcomes:

  1. Increased awareness and understanding of constitutional rights and legal frameworks (on gender equality and women empowerment) among stakeholders.
  2. Enhanced knowledge of the status and importance of gender bills in advancing gender equality and women's rights.
  3. Strengthened partnerships and collaboration among government agencies, civil society organizations, and partners to drive legislative reforms.
  4. Development of actionable strategies and recommendations to support the effective implementation of gender-related legislation.
  5. To create awareness about the process of drafting legislation and public participation in the legislative process

The session will be a Hybrid and will be convened as follows:
    Date : 15 March 2024
    Time : 09:00-13:30
Venue : SALGA National Office, Menlyn Corporate Park, Pretoria.

Furthermore, SALGA and SAWID will join the UNISA International Women's Day celebration on 8 March 2024, from 9:00 to 12:00, at the Senate Hall on the Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria, whereby the Portfolio Head will be one of the panellists.
