SALGA has always recognised the importance of Heritage Month and has used its strategic position to impart positive impact in promoting heritage within local municipalities. SALGA observes Heritage Month to further the promotion of education and appreciation of diverse cultures within the organisation and communities.

This year’s Heritage Day theme is “Celebrating Human Treasures by Asserting our African Identity” aimed at highlighting the role played by the living human treasures, living legends, the custodians of the cultural heritage and indigenous knowledge for their immense contribution to the arts, culture and heritage sector.

SALGA has partnered with Khensani Heritage Consulting to develop a sustainable model for heritage management at the local government level. The model will have a capacity building programme to ensure sustainable heritage management. The project is expected to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Introduce a Heritage Management Training Programme in collaboration with the University of Pretoria in order to build and provide capacity within Municipalities targeting staff at both operational and strategic levels of management at local government (this will be customised for people working in the management, marketing and recording agencies, museums, tourism, environmental education, archaeology, landscape design and planning
  • Develop legislative and regulatory framework for heritage conservation, protection and development at local government level
  • SALGA has partnered with Khensani Heritage Consulting to Develop an institutional framework for the heritage management in the context of Intergovernmental Relations Act of 2005

SALGA is also in the process of entering into partnership with the African Renaissance Indigenous Knowledge (iARI) organisation with the aim to identify the needs for the development of heritage through projects and plans. Both these partnerships will optimally contribute towards the efficient implementation of projects in municipalities, optimising on the highest return on investment.

SALGA hereby encourages municipalities to celebrate cultural diversity through indigenous games such as Dibeke, Kho-Kho, Drie Stokies, Juskei and Ncuva. The games are an ongoing programme and are used to promote recreational activities, social cohesion and nation building.
