The Moral Regeneration Movement and SALGA to promote ethics charter beyond the local government electionsPosted: 13 April 2016
Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) Chairperson Father Simangaliso Mkhatshwa says MRM saw that there was a need to compliment the work of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). He said the IEC has expressed its full support for the charter and even went further to encourage MRM and SALGA to pursue this process beyond the local government elections. Currently, the code of conduct which all political parties contesting elections must sign, is limited to an election period. Father Simangaliso Mkhatshwa says the sustained national conversation on values, ethics and moral citizenry is a very crucial exercise and it ties up well with their promotion of democracy work although with limits in terms of the legislative mandate. "The course of the struggle has changed and it was no longer about removing apartheid. Voting patterns are no longer rigid along the racial lines and the number of voters has increased. In contrast, certain realities have remained the same such as, the poor has remained poor and the richer is getting richer,” said Father Simangaliso Mkhatshwa Father Simangaliso Mkhatshwa says the Charter of Election Ethics will promote free and fair elections based on tolerance and an outcome of acceptable results.
