Federation of Canadian Municipalities and SALGA join forces to create jobs, reduce poverty and respond to climate changePosted: 30 May 2017
SALGA and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) have partnered to drive a pilot Local Economic Development initiative to assist struggling Eastern Cape municipalities. The initiative is aimed to create jobs, reduce poverty, and enhance the well-being of the people while empowering women, youth and vulnerable groups. The Government of Canada through its Global Affairs programme has provided funding to implement the project until March 31, 2021. The Programme aims to strengthen the capacity of the South African municipal sector and specific municipalities in the Eastern Cape province to contribute to South Africa’s priorities of reducing poverty, supporting economic growth, and responding to climate change by transitioning to a low carbon economy. Tebogo Matlou SALGA’s Business Analyst said through this work, SALGA, as the voice of municipalities in South Africa, will be better equipped to engage directly with its members and other stakeholders to meet these priorities in line with its mandate, which is to transform local government to enable it to fulfil its developmental mandate. |
