SALGA urges protestors to return back to communitiesPosted: 17 May 2017
The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) condemns community protests in Thokoza and Leratong in Gauteng. These protests have led to public violence, including the stoning of vehicles, burning of tires and the blocking of public roads. The violent nature of community protests in the Gauteng province and other parts of the country are cause for concern. As SALGA we encourage residents to raise their concerns in a constructive manner with municipalities and relevant government departments. Residents are also encouraged to be part of Integrated Development Planning processes and other consultative forums called by municipalities, so concerns can be raised and discussed in the appropriate platforms. There are local Councillors in every ward. These Councillors are the communication link between the communities and the municipality, to ensure residents concerns are addressed in the best possible manner. Communities must familiarise themselves with their local Councillors if they haven't already done so. We call on all protestors to return back to their respective communities and desist from public violence.
