SALGA Gauteng Province elects first female Provincial Executive Committee Chairperson in its conference

SALGA Gauteng Province has elected a new leadership to serve as the new Provincial Executive Committee for the fourth democratic local government term.
Councillor Busisiwe Modisakeng: Executive Mayor - Sedibeng District Municipality, was elected unopposed as the Chairperson of the Provincial Executive Committee for SALGA Gauteng on Friday, 30 September at the Kempton Park.
Cllr Modisakeng says: “It is such an honour to be elected as the first female provincial chairperson in Gauteng since the recognition of SALGA as the representative of Developmental Local Government. As a new Provincial Executive Committee, we will carry the baton from the previous leadership and promise to continue to drive the developmental local government agenda”.
Elected Members of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) include:
Deputy Chairperson: Cllr. Patricia Khumalo, Speaker - Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality
Deputy Chairperson: Cllr. Patrick Dipudi, Chief Whip - Mogale City
PEC Additional Member: Cllr. Matshidiso Mfikoe – City of Joburg
PEC Additional Member: Cllr. Nonkoliso Tunzi, Speaker- West Rand D
PEC Additional Member: Cllr. Mapiti Matsena - City of Tshwane
PEC Additional Member: Cllr. Jongisizwe Hlabathi, Chief Whip- Ekurhuleni
The conference left one (1) vacant position for the Deputy Chairperson and two (2) for the Additional Members. These, conference resolved would be filled within 30 days.
Cllr Modisakeng said she appreciated the diversity of the municipal leadership in Gauteng Province as a confirmation of a maturing constitutional democracy.
The two-day SALGA Gauteng Province, 29 – 30 September 2016, took place in Kempton Park in Johannesburg and was attended by municipal councillors of the 11 municipalities within the Gauteng Province including the three (3) metros, City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. Guests at the Provincial Conference included, Executive Mayors, Outgoing SALGA Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), Speakers of Provincial Legislature, Chief Whips, MMC’s, CFO’s, Provincial Departments, Professional Bodies, Sector Stakeholders and Sponsors.
The Gauteng Premier David Makhura addressed the conference on Thursday and told the delegates to rise above their “different political differences” for the sake of “improving the lives of the people and to create a citizen centred Gauteng”.
The Provincial Conference marks the beginning of a new term of local government and also sets the agenda for local government for the next five (5) years.
SALGA’s Provincial Conferences and the National Conference are themselves significant in the local government space as agenda setters with their institutional ability to detect the underlying current governance imperatives and political climate to shape and influence long term goals and objectives for the sector and also to take SALGA into new levels. |
