SALGA Solidarity Fund hand over to Nkangala District Municipalit

Posted: 20 January 2021

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in Mpumalanga handed over a donation of Personal Protective Equipment to Nkangala District Municipality, during a virtual meeting that took place today as part of the SALGA Solidarity Fund contribution to identified municipalities across the nine (9) provinces.
SALGA’s National Executive Committee meeting held on the 10th of April 2020, resolved to recommend that Councillors, municipal officials and SALGA Staff should respond to the President’s call of making a financial contribution towards the response to the COVID-19 pandemic following the national state of disaster declaration.

The Solidarity Fund was created as a platform for all South Africans from the Public and Private sector, as well as civil society and the general public to unite the nation in the response against the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The President, Hon. Cyril Ramaphosa, made a call upon all organizations and individuals to put their efforts together and make contributions towards the relief of Covid-19 and desperately needed support for frontline workers and those affected. The President further called upon the different government institutions to establish their own solidarity funds and identify areas to provide support.

SALGA employees pledged their contribution from varied options which included sacrificing accumulated leave days, ranging from 1 to 3 months, to contributing a specific amount that is not equal to the leave accrual. Employees were consulted to recommend how the contribution can be utilized, with a majority recommending that it should be used to support municipalities in responding to COVID-19.  It was then resolved that the funds should be spent on PPE’s for frontline workers responsible for the provision of essential services, for example, municipal waste collectors, municipal health services officials, cemetery maintenance officials, water and sanitation officials and other employees fitting into the category of frontline workers.

The package includes disposable coveralls, disposable gowns, surgical gloves as well as Heavy duty gloves. Two (2) municipalities (comprising of 1 local municipality and 1 district municipality) per province were identified as beneficiaries for the SALGA Solidarity Fund. SALGA Mpumalanga identified Nkangala District Municipality and Bushbuckridge Local Municipality as beneficiaries of the fund.

“It gives me great pleasure to hand over these PPE’s to Nkangala District Municipality today. It is SALGA’s belief that the provision of these equipment will support service delivery within the district, by giving the employees peace of mind as they will be properly protected while they service the local communities of Nkangala. It is our belief and hope that these will provide some relief to the municipality as you continue to provide good quality services to the communities.”, said Cllr. Muzi Chirwa, Chairperson of SALGA Mpumalanga, during the virtual handover.

“As Nkangala District Municipality, we commit ourselves to utilising the donated items effectively towards the work that we as a municipality must carry out in supporting and assisting communities as we battle the Covid-19 pandemic. We also truly appreciate the support that has been provided to us by SALGA”, said the Executive Mayor of Nkangala District Municipality Cllr. Masilela.
