SALGA PRESIDENT APPOINTED AS CHAIRPERSON OF THE COMMONWEALTH WOMEN IN LOCAL GOVERNMNET FORUM
Cllr. Thembi Nkadimeng, President of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), has been appointed as chairperson of the Commonwealth Women in Local Government Network (ComWLG), a network of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) that aims to promote gender equality and greater representation of women in Local Government. In her two-year role as chairperson of the ComWLG Steering Committee, Cllr. Nkadimeng will lead in strengthening women’s participation in local governments across the world by representing the ComWLG Network on the CLGF Board, including the oversight of gender mainstreaming through CLGF policy making, programmes and board decision making. Cllr. Nkadimeng will also represent the ComWLG Network at International, Commonwealth and regional events and meetings where appropriate. Established in 2017, the ComWLG aims to support women in playing a full and active role in public life, particularly with regard to equal representation in local governance. The ComWLG also supports women in local government by providing a platform to strengthen Commonwealth advocacy for women; and to capture and share experiences and best practice from across the 54 countries. This is in line with Sustainable Development Goal 5 of the United Nations (UN): Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cllr. Nkadimeng will chair the first meeting of the ComWLG Steering Committee on Wednesday, 11 October 2020, through a virtual meeting platform. Lucy Slack, CLGF Deputy Secretary-General said of Cllr. Nkadimeng’s appointment: “We look forward to your participation and collaborative efforts in advancing the Women’s agenda.”
