South African Local Government Association (SALGA) – Tshwane University of Technology: Virtual Seminar | Arts, Culture and Heritage for Sustainable Local Development

Posted: 23 September 2020

Arts, Culture and Heritage (ACH) are domains whose developmental potential have not been fully explored and unleashed, especially in the Urban and Rural Planning in the Local Government space. This potential is relevant to responding to the demand of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) for creative innovation, social resilience of communities to COVID-19 and the Indigenous Knowledge System (IKS) to ecological challenges imposed by the climate change.

Join the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) for a three-day seminar on the 23, 29 and 30 September 2020, to reflect on Culture for Sustainable Local Development.

The seminar will be hosted on a virtual platform by SALGA in collaboration with Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and United Nations Education and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chair and the United Nations Habitat (UN-Habitat).

The seminar aims to draw together insights from a variety of top experts on the ACH landscape and on the historical and contemporary issues that shape it.

Main seminar objectives:

  • Reflect on the lack of cultural and urban creativity considerations in the current local strategic and spatial development planning processes;
  • Debate the value of ACH and cultural planning in stimulating local economies;
  • Stimulate the discourse on a ACH approach to town planning and urban creativity and other domains of development;
  • Increase an awareness on the centrality of ACH, IKS in particular, in the quest for sustainable rural-urban development; and
  • Relate ACH to IKS and the 4IR in the context of COVID -19 and beyond.

The following experts, alongside others, will offer their perspectives on different aspects of the arts, culture and heritage sector in the context of socio-economic development.
