SALGA in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation commemorates Nelson Mandela Day by donating sanitary towels and books to Diepsloot schools.Posted: 19 July 2016
SALGA in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation on the 18th of July, joined the world in commemorating the international Nelson Mandela Day by donating school text books and Sanitary towels to girl learners at Diepsloot and Sunrise Secondary Schools in Diepsloot, Johannesburg. Diepsloot and Sunrise Secondary schools are located side by side in Diepsloot, a densely populated township in the north of Johannesburg. The 18th July is the birth date of the late first democratically elected President of the Republic of South Africa, Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela. The commemoration of this Day was first popularised by the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF), the 46664 Campaign, and the United Nations (UN) in 2009. The commemoration of the Day is meant to entrench Mandela's legacy into, among others, human dignity, human rights, conflict resolution, reconciliation and racial, gender and education equality not only in South Africa but in the whole world. Speaking during a brief handover ceremony, SALGA CEO Mr Xolile George called on all South Africans to emulate Tata Madiba's character of selflessness, respect, compassion and humbleness. Later on, SALGA CEO and the Executive Manager in the office of the CEO Mr Seana Nkhahle together with SALGA staff handed over the donations to the two schools. SALGA wishes to thank the following partners in contributing to the many books SALGA donated to Diepsloot Secondary School. - Lapa Uitgewers SALGA is also grateful for the contributions made by Euro Car who assisted with two minibuses, City of Tshwane for providing a bus as well as the Johannesburg Metro Police Department for providing security on the Nelson Mandela Day. |
