Metropolitan heads of water & sanitation meet to explore mechanisms to ensure water security in Durban

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in collaboration with City of EThekwini is hosting the City Water Managers Forum on the 2-3 September in Durban. The forum is constituted by heads of all 8 Metros responsible for the management of water and sanitation.  The 8 Metros serve about 22% of South Africa’s population. The primary purpose of the forum is amongst others for the heads to reflect on issues that affected the delivery of water and sanitation in respective Metros, share good and bad practices and importantly to explore innovative solutions in ensuring delivery of sustainable water and sanitation. Importantly in sustaining continuous access to sustainable water and sanitation Metros.

Topics to be discussed at the forum includes amongst others, how Metros are addressing delivery of services in unplanned settlements, water security measures and conceptualisation of project(s) that seek to reduce cost of running the business whilst at the same time improve revenue. These issues will be supplemented by visits to innovative sanitation technology sites currently piloted by EThekwini municipality through by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation re-invent the toilet programme.

Supplementary to the forum agenda items, a number of key stakeholder have been invited to share with the managers perspectives on issues such latest technological solutions for the water and sanitation sector, implications for the Cities on the water security plan currently in development by the National Planning Commission and innovative funding instruments to ensure in water security

To this end, it is anticipated that the forum will agree and adopt on approaches that seek to ensure sustainability of water and sanitation services particularly in unplanned settlements and also to ensure that through water, Cities can contribute to the socio - economic development imperatives of South Africa.
