SALGA and the South African Research Chair for Cities Law & Environmental Sustainability (CLES) will on 27 – 28 November 2019 host the 1st Annual National Postgraduate Student Conference on Local Government and Urban Governance.
A key innovative global Sustainable Development Goals (SDDs) is the introduction of sub-national goal focusing on urban areas. An increasingly urbanized world presents governance challenges to national, provincial and local governments over the practical implementation of a range of SDGs. The implication for South Africa, is to revisit approaches to governance.
Under the topic: “Recent Developments in Local Government Law, Policy and Practice towards Implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” the conference anticipates to address the new approaches and forms to local governance in response to the ideals and targets of SDG 11 (the urban goal).
The conference will gather a group of 60 honours, masters and doctoral level students from across the country to present on their ongoing or recently completed local government research. The conference is open to students from a range of related study fields and will be held at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University.
Students who recently graduated masters and doctoral degrees (2018/19) are hereby invited to submit their abstracts not exceeding 150 – 200 words for the conference. Submissions pertaining to any aspect of law and urban governance, urban planning and local governance will be considered, provided that the paper addresses a research theme that feeds into the main conference theme.
Deadline: 16 August 2019
