Celebrating Africa Day: A Healthy Lifestyle Prolongs Life
May 25, 2019, will mark 56 years since Africa Day was conceived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This year’s theme: “Healthy Lifestyle Prolongs Life” has been selected to emphasize the significant relationship between unhealthy lifestyle and premature mortality. The theme is in line with Aspiration 1 of the Agenda 2063 which is “A prosperous Africa, based on inclusive growth and sustainable development”. This momentous day commemorates the founding of the African Union in 1963. It is intended to celebrate and acknowledge the successes of the union in the fight against colonialism and apartheid, as well as the progress that Africa has made while reflecting upon the common challenges that the continent face in a global environment. Apart from 25 May, the entire month has been set out to observe the significance of our continent. Significantly for South Africa, this year’s Africa Day will have the country host the inauguration of its 6th democratically-elected President, Honourable Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria. |
