SALGA congratulates former Chairperson, Amos Masondo on his appointment as the Chairperson of National Council of Provinces (NCOP)
SALGA congratulates its former national chairperson, Honourable Amos Masondo on his appointment as the Chairperson of the National Council of Province (NCOP). Former Premier of Northern Cape, Sylvia Lucas has been confirmed as the Deputy Chairperson of the house, and Seiso Mohai as the Chief Whip. Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng presided over the swearing in ceremony of the NCOP delegates in Parliament. The NCOP consists of 90 provincial delegates. This means that each province is equally represented by 10 delegates, collectively referred to as provincial delegations. The representatives ensures that provincial interests are taken into account in the national sphere of government, by ensuring participation in the national legislative process and by providing a national forum for consideration of issues affecting provinces. During his address, Hon. Masondo noted “SALGA for bringing a full complement of its delegation”, admiring the support as something that needed to be emulated. The SALGA delegation was led by NEC member Cllr Stofile. Hon. Masondo served as Mayor of Johannesburg in 2000 concurrently serving as the chairperson of SALGA. Former President Kgalema Motlanthe described Masondo as “an outstanding leader, a gracious human being and a torch bearer of the democratic revolution in this country.” During his term as the mayor of Johannesburg and Chairperson of SALGA, Hon. Masondo was instrumental in the building and development of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.The election of the presiding officers of the NCOP brings to an end parliamentary processes ahead of the start of the sixth term of government. SALGA congratulates all members and wishes them well as they are to continue to serve the people of South Africa. |
