SALGA and UN-SA institutionalise partnership to enforce Sustainability Development Goals

Posted: 11 December 2018

SALGA CEO Xolile George and United Nations in South Africa Resident Coordinator Ms Nardos Bekele-Thomas signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to provide a governance institutional framework of cooperation to facilitate and strengthen collaboration between Parties on a non-exclusive basis, in areas of common interest.

The United Nations agencies at the country level work with partners to promote among other things sustainable development, eradication of poverty, advancement of women, good governance and the rule of law. The United Nations represented by 17 agencies in South Africa is interested in enhancing its development activities and contributing to the national efforts of realizing the Sustainable Development Goals.

South Africa being a signatory to the various global, continental and regional agreements on development has the obligation to incorporate these into the country’s national planning frameworks.

Therefore, SALGA being an association of municipalities established in terms of section 163 of the Constitution realises that there is a need to strengthen and institutionalise a holistic partnership with all UN agencies.

The MoU will cooperate mutual concern to enhance the effectiveness of their development efforts as it is essential to facilitate a coordinated approach to localising the SDG at a municipal level.

This approach will be achieved through the collaboration of the UN fostering sharing of knowledge, thought leadership, best practices and innovations in support of the interests of Local Government.

The UN-SA will further offer relevant subject matter experts that will contribute to the development of capacity building materials for the benefit of the Local Government sector. Moreover, SALGA and UN-SA will mobilise technical advisory and other forms of support to give effect to SALGA's strategic goal relating to SDGs.

The implementation of all activities will be carried out on the basis of project documents agreed between SALGA and UN-SA, thus be in accordance with the applicable Parties regulations, rules, policies and procedures
