2019 Call for papers

SALGA proudly announces the call for papers for the 2nd Research Colloquium. The colloquium will be hosted  in partnership with the Dullah Omar Institute. It will consider submissions that fall in one or more of the following themes:

Spatially Just, Inclusive and Transformative Cities
Local government Financing Instruments for the future we want
Collaborative governance and relations towards sustainable and inclusive municipalities.
The theme “Addressing inequality through inclusive, sustainable and viable local governments” intends to drive debate towards meaningful solutions and some questions to be answered are:
What exactly does ‘sustainability and viability in a local government context mean? 
Can municipalities be financially sustainable and viable with the current funding model?
Can intergovernmental fiscal transfers counter inequality among municipalities?
What are the threats to the sustainability and financial viability of local government?
Are there alternative financial instruments for local governments?
How are the cities dealing with the demands urbanization exert on infrastructure and services?
Are citizens empowered to hold local government accountable?
What are the practical tools to strengthen civic engagement?
Do the development planning tools currently being used by government and municipalities in particular enable effective spatial transformation?
How can local governments leverage land to achieve inclusionary and efficient settlements?

Submission guidelines and important dates

All abstracts must be submitted in English on or before 30 November 2018 with key words and may not exceed 400 words. The contact person for enquiries and submissions is Ms L Kaywood - lkaywood@salga.org.za. Please note not all abstracts received will be selected for presentation at the Colloquium. Some of the best papers presented at the colloquium will be included in a peer-reviewed academic book. The colloquium shall be held in Durban on 11 – 12 March 2019.
