SALGA Launches Seminars to Inspire Leadership in Municipalities

Posted: 10 July 2018

SALGA will on Thursday, 12 July, convene the inaugural Local Links Leadership Conversations Lecture Series Seminar, at the WITS School of Governance (WSG) under the theme “Honouring the Legacy of Nelson Mandela through Inspiring Thought Leadership in Local Government Sphere”.

Professor Thuli Madonsela, former South African Public Protector will deliver the keynote address focusing on the theme “Inspiring Integral Leadership for sustainable local government sphere in honour of Nelson Mandela”.

CoGTA Minister Honourable Dr Zweli Mkhize, along with Gauteng City Region Observatory, Executive Director Dr Robin Moore; Deputy Auditor General Tsakani Ratsela and the Moral Regeneration Movement Chairperson Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa will participate in a high level panel discussion. SALGA President Councillor Parks Tau, alongside Chairperson of the Kagiso Trust Reverend Frank Chikane, CEO of Nelson Mandela Foundation Sello Hatang and Associate Professor, Professor William Gumede from WITS School of Governance will also take part in the panel discussions.

The Local Links Leadership Conversations is one of SALGA Centre for Leadership and Governance’s intervention programmes. As a continuous development programme, it is anchored on an approach of delivering seminar styled/lecture series driven leadership conversations, based on specific leadership conversations themes which reflect the everyday complexities faced by local leaders in the local governance sphere with the aim of inspiring good leadership. As part of its strategic agenda, SALGA continuously formulates and implements a range of municipal leadership focused interventions aimed at enhancing the capacity of municipalities to adequately respond to the challenges they face in local government. In 2017, SALGA in partnership with WSG initiated Leadership in Local Government (LMG), targeting the municipal leadership echelon.

The LMG is a unique professional training and development programme for municipal leaders structured as a formalised certificated programme and created in response to the inherent needs of the local government, political and administrative leaders, with executive and oversight responsibilities in the development of their localities.

The day will culminate with a graduation ceremony of approximately 104 municipal leaders from various municipalities, who have completed this extensive LGSETA funded programme. Join the conversation, and follow us on twitter, Facebook and Instagram
