The Buffalo City Metro Municipality (BCMM) together with the Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), will from 28 June to 1 July 2018 host the BRICS sectoral meetings in East London, Eastern Cape.

As part of the numerous BRICS sectoral meetings to be hosted by South Africa during 2018 - COGTA and BCMM will host the following three meetings:

  • 28 - 29 June 2018 - The BRICS Friendship Cities, Local Government Cooperation and Urbanisation Forum.
  • 29 June - 30 June - Technical engagements between the BRICS Task Force on Disaster Management.
  • 01 July 2018 - The Meeting of BRICS Ministers responsible for Disaster Management.

The event will bring with it various socio-economic spin offs including a boost into the local formal and informal tourism sector as well as investment opportunities for BCMM. This is the first time our BCMM is hosting an event of this magnitude and the second time a South African City is hosting it.
About 400 international and national delegates plus a contingent of delegates from government and businesses around the Eastern Cape are expected at the meeting. Also during the meeting, BCMM we will also use this opportunity to showcase to visitors what the City has to offer as a tourist destination. There are scheduled tours that will be offered to our visitors, which include Cultural tours in Mdantsane, Ginsberg and East London.

Buffalo City Metro Municipality Communication Manager Samkelo Ngwenya says locals will also be afforded an opportunity to showcase their arts and crafts and sell to international guests. Ngwenya says the council has taken a decision for SMME’s to be part of the procurement processes for the event.
”From a local formalised business point of view, our guests will be afforded an opportunity to showcase their businesses for investment opportunities through exhibition stalls,” he said in a statement.

The Executive Mayor of Buffalo City Metro Municipality which encompasses East London, King Williams Town and surrounding areas, Councillor Xola Pakati has also organised a networking session where all BCMM mayors will get to be part of the BRICS program.
