Newly appointed CoGTA Minister address SALGA Energy Summit

Newly appointed Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) honourable Zweli Mkhize presented a keynote address at the second day of the SALGA Energy Summit hosted at the Sandton Convention Centre, Gauteng.
Addressing about one thousand two hundred delegates on the role of Local in the Energy Landscape, minister Mkhize said South Africa must find a way to resolve the energy crisis of energy supply especially in municipalities as there is a "lack of parity between municipal supply areas as well as Eskom supply areas also pose a challenge to municipalities."
He said CoGTA as the responsible ministry in the local government sector is grateful for SALGA’s inputs in addressing the energy crisis. He said the Summit came at an opportune time and he called for municipalities to adapt to renewable energy sources.
The Summit comes just less than a month after SALGA raised concerns during the recent State of the Nation Address Debate about the major transition and disruption currently being experienced by the energy sector both locally and globally.
SALGA has noted that the transition in the energy sector is driven by a range of factors. These include an increasing demand on networks ranging from a reliability and accessibility perspective to technological advances and an increased emphasis on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
