SALGA commemorates International Women’s Day

The first international Women’s day was celebrated back in 1908 when a group of 15,000 women marched on the streets of New York, demanding their rights. Since then every year on 8th March the world joins hands together to support, raise, inspire and motivate women across all fields of work. But far from singling out women, the day focuses on unity, equality and advocacy especially in a world where the differences and injustices between women and men are eminent.

In 2015, world leaders adopted the Sustainable Development Goals, placing gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  Achievement of the goals, including ending poverty, promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, reducing inequalities within and between countries, and achieving gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls, rests upon unlocking the full potential of women in the world of work.

The recent World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report indicates that measures that are key to ensuring women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work must include bridging the gender pay gap, which stands at 24 per cent globally; recognizing women’s unpaid care and domestic work and addressing the gender deficit in care work; as well as addressing the gender gaps in leadership, entrepreneurship and access to social protection; and ensuring gender-responsive economic policies for job creation, poverty reduction and sustainable, inclusive growth.

International Women’s Day seeks to celebrate women’s achievements, as well as act as a catalyst for change when it comes to gender equality. It also provides an important moment to showcase commitment to women’s equality, launch new initiatives and action, raise awareness and highlight gender parity gains.

Now, more than ever, there’s a strong call-to-action to press forward and progress gender parity. A strong call to #PressforProgress. A strong call to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive. Collectively every person and all groups can make a difference within their sphere of influence by taking concrete action to help drive gender parity.

The SALGA Women’s Commission is joining the rest of the world to commemorate  (IWD) to press forward for full recognition of women’s rights. This year’s theme #PressforProgress calls for collective action to press for gender parity, revival of advocacy and activism.

“Let’s all collaborate to accelerate gender parity so that our collective action can empower equality worldwide”.
