National Local Economic Development Conference to bring economic benefits and improve quality of life

Posted: 10 November 2017

The National Local Economic Development (LED) Conference which took place 9-10 November 2017 at Saint Georges Hotel, Centurion, is a government initiative aimed to push the country towards inclusive economic development in order to build an equal and prosperous South Africa.

SALGA President Cllr Parks Tau said he hoped at the end of the two-day conference “we will be able to craft a South African-focused LED programme of action that brings economic benefits and improves the quality of life of all our people. "

The LED conference is an initiative of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) and Small Business Development. Minster Des Van Rooyen and Minister Lindiwe Zulu both addressed the conference on the first day.  SALGA President Parks Tau delivered a message of support to the conference and its delegates.

SALGA’s work in the LED space is focused on small-town regeneration, coupled with the regional economy approach to development. One of our successful pilot projects in this regard is called the Karoo Small Town Regeneration (STR) Initiative.

“This Initiative can serve as a valuable case study since it is a bottom-up initiative, meaning the individual municipalities on the ground are the core initiators and drive the agenda. It also relies heavily on inter-municipal cooperation to achieve development outcomes,” Tau told the delegates.

The Karoo STR Initiative is a regional development endeavour initiated by the municipalities located within the Karoo eco-region. It covers the four (4) provincial boundaries of the Northern Cape, Free State, Eastern Cape and Western Cape.

The conference was held under the theme: “Positioning Local Economic Development (LED) to Achieve Inclusive Economic Transformation”.
