South African local government delegation gears up for UN Climate Change Conference - COP23

Posted: 03 November 2017

The South African Local Government Association is to attend the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference – COP23 held in Bonn, Germany from 6 – 17 November 2017.

The Conference officially referred to as COP 23, is hosted by the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and presided over by Fiji. The conference is held to advance the aims and ambitions of the Paris Agreement and to achieve progress on its implementation guidelines.

The Local Government delegation that will attend COP 23 consists of SALGA National Executive Committee members (NEC) and administrators that will form part of a broader South African delegation to COP23.

SALGA Chairperson of the National Environmental Planning & Climate Resilience Working Group Councillor Florence Radzilani says: “The Paris Agreement is a done deal, what is important now moving forward is the rules of the game, and for us is to drive and guide the implementation of Local Government according to the rules. The National Development Plan (NDP) makes a commitment to a lower carbon and climate-resilient future, with the National Climate Change Response White Paper (NCCRP) setting out a pathway to achieve this.”

“Coping with climate change requires local action and creative responses at all levels of society and governance, Local Government is a focal point and it is where everything happens,” says Cllr Florence Radzilani.

The South African delegation looks forward to meeting other nations of the world so they can bring back the expertise and resolutions home for implementation.
