SALGA and the Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE) of the City of eThekwini hosted the annual meeting of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) Capacity and Institution Building (CIB) Working Group, at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on 26 - 28 September.

The CIB Working Group is a technical platform for professionals from worldwide Local Government Associations (LGAs) and individual local governments active in the field of capacity development and local government development cooperation.

The Working Group is part of the world organisation United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and provides a platform for discussions and information exchange on developments in local government development cooperation, in order to enhance the quality of this work and to coordinate activities and programmes. This year’s CIB annual meeting took place on the African continent.

Among those who attended the CIB working group, were directors and managers of international departments from world-wide associations of local governments and cities.

The President of SALGA and the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) Councillor Parks Tau delivered a keynote address at the opening of the workshop and urged the Working Group members to continue the good work to enhance amplified learning and cooperation

During the workshop different South African keynote speakers shed light on the latest trends and developments in development cooperation in Africa and on the particular needs of local governments and decentralisation processes that local government capacity development programmes can contribute to.

A diversity of panel discussions and break away sessions on new developments in development cooperation, project management and at the level of the donor community also took place
