SALGA to host the 11th National Municipal Managers Forum in George, Cape Town.

Posted: 29 August 2017

SALGA will convene the 11th instalment of the National Municipal Managers Forum (NMMF) at George Local Municipality in the Western Cape from 31 August to 01 September, to continue efforts to address issues facing local government and Municipal Managers in particular.

About 200 Municipal Managers are expected at the forum which will discuss Local Government Policy Agenda as well as reflect on the local government progress over the past term and outline the strategic objectives and priorities leading up to 2021 and up to 2030.

Local government in South Africa has undergone rapid transition and transformation over the last 20 years. The sector has attained significant achievements and important milestones, as reflected in the increased number of people who now have access to services, many of whom previously had no access to these services.  However, more work still needs to be done to address the remaining challenges.

Key speakers expected at the forum include Auditor General Mr Kimi Makwetu, Statistics SA Statistician General Statistics Mr Pali Lehohla, and Commissioner Ms Sue Bannister. Other key speakers expected at the forum are Financial and Fiscal Commission Programme Manager for Local Government Unit, Dr Mkhululi Ncube and Municipal Demarcation Board COO Mr Aluwani Ramagadza.

Past and present Municipal Managers will also share their insights and experiences on the role of Municipal Managers in navigating a highly dynamic local government environment and the challenges faced by Municipal Mangers in South Africa, and how they can be addressed.

SALGA has initiated a number of programmes to address challenges facing local government, amongst them the regular engagements with the administrative executives of municipalities. The forum will focus on the following key issues:

  1. Reflect on the importance of local government in enabling and supporting national and global agenda and priorities;
  2. Reflect on challenges facing amalgamated and coalition-led municipalities and propose solutions and way forward;
  3. Reflect on municipal finances and financial governance focusing on municipal audit outcomes of 2015/2016, billing, revenue enhancements and MSCOA implementation;
  4. Facilitate peer learning through the sharing of good practices and innovations;
