SALGA acts against poverty during 2017 Nelson Mandela Day CommemorationPosted: 19 July 2017
SALGA together with the City of Tshwane, through the office of the Chief Whip, spent Nelson Mandela Day supporting and helping needy learners at Kodumela Primary School in Pretoria. The school has about 495 learners mostly from indigent families in the surrounding farms. Learners are transported to and from school on a daily basis by buses and they depend on the daily meal provided by the school feeding scheme for their nutrition in between classes. During the day, SALGA donated text books towards starting a library at the school and also provided dignity packs (comprising of pads, a diary, and a bag) for a semester to 67 girls including a puberty booklet. While delivering his keynote address, SALGA CEO Xolile George said if we focus on education we shall empower our communities. "It is through education that a child of a farmer or a miner can one day become a CEO of a big Company," he said. SALGA CEO together with staff from SALGA and City of Tshwane painted walls at the school and donated food parcels which learners took home. A vegetable garden was also created to supply the school feeding scheme. SAKATA Seeds will also educate learners on how to take care of their food garden. As part of promoting social cohesion through sport, netball and soccer kits were donated by both organisations. The School's principal Ms. Mapula Rammuki thanked SALGA and the City of Tshwane for the donations to the school. Rammuki said the 495 learners mostly from indigent families will benefit from this good gesture by both SALGA and the City of Tshwane. The school was identified based on the theme for the 2017 Mandela Day, #ActionAgainstPoverty. |
