Mayors from all over South Africa took a stand against violence directed at women and children, during SALGA’s Inaugural Council of Mayors which was convened in Cape Town, Civic Centre, Council Chambers, on 8 - 9 June 2017.
Mayors consisting of Metropolitan, District, and Local Mayors took part in a two-day Council which was convened in accordance with article 18 of the SALGA Constitution.
Also in attendance, was the SALGA and the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) President, Councillor Parks Tau, CoGTA Deputy Minister Andries Nel, Minister of Economic Development Ebrahim Patel and Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane who was recently appointed South Africa's fourth Public Protector.
During his keynote address SALGA and the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) President, Councillor Parks Tau said the Council of Mayors must reaffirm the call for strategic alliances with civil society and the mobilisation of private sector investment for the people of South Africa.
“Addressing the new global development paradigm, therefore, requires new and innovative thinking,” said Tau.
CoGTA Deputy Minister Andries Nel gave an address on “What is the role of Local Government in the New Urban, Global, and Local Agenda” while Minister of Economic Development Ebrahim Patel said Urbanisation is a potentially transformative development for the economy and opportunity for growth.
