SESSION 3: PANEL DISCUSSION ON THE SOUTH AFRICAN MEDIA LANDSCAPE AND HOW TO IMPROVE MEDIA COVERAGE

Overview: Both municipalities and local media have an important role to play in communicating with the public. By having an open communication policy, municipalities can address the negative perceptions of the public and keep them informed about service delivery progress and delays, plans and priorities and opportunities for public input. At the same time, the media has a critical role to play in ensuring a healthy democracy by informing citizens, holding politicians and public servants accountable by acting as an independent body and providing a ‘space’ where citizens can participate in discussions and deliberate over public issues.

Outcome: A deeper understanding of the South African media landscape and how to improve communication.
